on escaping florida

America is a scary place to be right now.
Florida is a marginally scarier place to be right now.
My town is a destination for tourists and wealthy snowbirds looking for a false sense of "small-town community." I'm surrounded by rich golf-cart-owning folks with flocks of pale-skinned, flaxen-haired, ocean-eyed children in tow. Sometimes it feels like Florida is the new Northwest Territorial Imperative.
I have this pipe dream that in a year I'll move to Philidelphia and drag my partner and the rest of our queer friends along with me.
In the meantime, I'll work to strengthen the bonds that I have. I'll be studying more on preparedness and sharing what I've learned with those that I love. I'll take to heart the fact that we keep us safe.
The world is uncertain, but in knowing this, there is time to prepare accordingly.
