love letter to the miyoo mini plus

its no secret i grew up sheltered. when people my age talk about the media they enjoyed as kids, its not often i find a common thread.

i grew up in a somewhat insular community that traveled around the states constantly. my parents didnt see the point in keeping me up to date with pop culture and i didnt have outside friends to feed me information.

being perpetually out of the loop seems to be a reoccuring theme in my life.

i always wished i grew up playing video games. hearing my friends recall and discuss games they played in childhood so vividly ... its something ill never experience. ive outgrown the ability to suspend my disbelief and fully immerse myself in media.

keyword - fully.

i recently purchased a miyoo mini plus after trying and failing to find a tetris handheld i could stick in my bag and bring along with me - what a fortunate failure that was.

after downloading onion os, a few rom packs, and playing around with customization, i bookmared a few titles that interested me. ham ham heartbreak. mr driller 2. animal crossing wild world. ace attorney. klonoa. various kirby games. castlevania. the list goes on.

the graphic simplicity and story complexity of these older games impressed me - i was hooked.

ive kept this little emulator no more than 2 ft from my person since the day i got it. its the perfect size to keep in my pocket during the day or under my pillow for when i wake up in the middle of the night. im invested in the stories, the characters, the stakes.

the best thing about missing out on video games as a kid is getting to play them all for the first time as an adult.
